Gas Fireplace Maintenance & Tune-Ups

One visit a year keeps the glass clear, the flame honest, and the first cold night boring — in the best possible way.

The Checklist

What a Tune-Up Covers

The full service, the way the manufacturer intended. Not a dust and a handshake.

Glass Off & Cleaned

The haze that builds on the inside of the glass comes off, and the gasket gets checked while we're in there.

Burner & Pilot Cleaned

Dust and pet hair are the enemies of a clean flame. The burner ports and pilot assembly get cleared and adjusted.

Logs Reset Right

Logs and embers go back exactly the way the manual lays them out, because placement changes how the flame burns and where it soots.

Ignition & Remote Tested

Igniter, thermopile, receiver, batteries: the whole chain that stands between the switch and the flame.

Fan & Blower Serviced

If your unit moves air, the fan gets cleaned and checked. A packed blower is the most common noise complaint we hear.

Combustion & Safety Check

Gas pressure, flame quality, and venting: the licensed-gas-fitter part of the visit, and the reason it's not a DIY job.

Once a Year, On Purpose

Why Annual Service Pays for Itself

A gas fireplace fails quietly. The flame drifts from crisp blue-orange to lazy yellow. The igniter clicks a little longer each fall. The fan picks up a whisper of grind. None of it stops the show, until the one night it does.

An annual tune-up resets all of it: clean combustion, tested ignition, a flame that looks the way it did the year it went in. And with so many of Frederick County's gas fireplaces dating to the 90s and 2000s, a lot of them are right at the age where the small stuff starts.

Book it in late summer or fall. Your January self will never know what it missed, which is the whole point.

“My experience with Tolbard was top notch from beginning to end. The person who answered the phone was friendly and very helpful and quickly scheduled an appointment. I was called the day before to remind me of the time. Angela was right on time and explained everything she was going to do. She showed me exactly how everything on my fireplace unit worked and cleaned and inspected it thoroughly. All costs were explained up front. I will definitely be using Tolbard for the bi-annual cleaning of my fireplace!”

Tune-Up Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

More on the full FAQ page.

What does a gas fireplace tune-up include?
The glass comes off and gets cleaned, the burner and pilot assembly are cleaned and adjusted, the logs or media are reset the way the manufacturer laid them out, the ignition system and remote are tested, the fan is cleaned if you have one, and the whole system gets a combustion and safety check, venting included.
When is the best time to schedule a tune-up?
Late summer and early fall are ideal. The schedule is friendlier and your fireplace is proven ready before the first cold night. The worst time to discover a problem is the week everyone else discovers theirs.
Does a fireplace that seems fine really need service?
A gas fireplace fails quietly: the flame drifts dirtier, the igniter wears, dust packs the fan. Annual service keeps it burning clean and catches the small stuff while it's still small. It's the same logic as a furnace tune-up, and it's the single most common booking we take.
Can a gas fireplace run during a power outage?
Most can. A standing pilot or battery-backup ignition doesn't need house power, which makes a healthy gas fireplace a genuinely useful backup heat source in an outage. A tune-up is how you know yours will actually light when the lights are out.
